Disaster Risk Management in the Americas – The IDRL Guidelines and the Role of the IFRC (David Fisher,)

The recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile have again underscored the high vulnerability
of countries in the Americas to natural hazards. In particular, in the Caribbean and
Central America, annual storms and hurricanes are a constant and predictable threat.
Seismic and volcanic activities are frequent in South America. Other hazards, including
extreme temperatures and flooding, can be found throughout the region.
